A meditation on sadness
Sadness of Staying is a emotionally expressive sculpture, commenced as a meditation on an inexplicable sadness.
Umberto Boccioni’s painting, States of Mind III; Those Who Stay came to mind and so I employed slanting rain forms meeting, and being diverted around a form that wasn’t there. After clinging to the shape of the void, the diverted water streams over its impossible edges in long mournful rivulets.
A strange fondness
But despite its despondent tone, the simplicity and emotional honesty of Sadness of Staying makes me strangely fond of this sculpture. Especially after McKinney Foundry patinated it with iron(III) ferrocyanide, also known as Prussian_blue (the chemical compound used in blueprints).
