Slingshot was a joyous outpouring of left handed creativity following two years of tendon surgery to my dominant right hand. The result of an experimental application of my improvisational drawing technique in cranked clay relief.
From a hemisphere an eruption of form radiates out. Allusions to comic book explosions, fans and the aureola of sacred imagery come to mind. In the surrounding plains and directional arrow, smoothed clay is and patterned with Outsider Art-esque cross hatching.
Two orientations
In its two orientations, allusions to creation and destruction, sex and death seem to predominate. Hung one way, perhaps reminiscent of an orgasmic eruption; the other, the discharge of a firearm? Conceivably then, a comment on the yin and yang of the the male psyche?
In truth these allusions weren’t intentional, just retrospective interpretations of an improvisational accident. Like a Rorschach test, meaning is in the eye of the beholder, remaining an open question not prescribed fact.
